Tapers suck

So, I'm tapering for this half marathon... following instructions to shorten the runs and avoid hill training and speed training. My chiropractor said, "Just get out there and have some fun with your run!"

I looked at him and said, "Fun?"

What I like about training is that it makes me hurt (in a good way), and feel raw and powerful - even if I am not.

Nevertheless, I have been cutting back.

My knee feels much better for it, but I have to tell you, I hate it. I hate every second of getting out there and not pushing... just trying to take it easy.

I feel fat and slow and anxious... well, more so than usual, anyway.

My room mate told me today that I was so wired I was like Beavis on caffeine pills.

I figure that the only appropriate reply is: "This sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before."

(Well, OK, let's be honest, tapers don't suck as much as injury, but I just couldn't resist the Butt-Head line there.)

You know what it is don't you? Taper-madness! It strikes us all. Everyone feels fat and anxious. Oh, and gets phantom, strange pains. You'll be great on race day though!

OK, I had to read back a bit - and surely I think your decision to run half-marathon is awesome! C'mon, been scared is good, it's a great feeling, and you absolutely CAN do it, and you'll never know if you can unless you try, right? There is no failure, only lessons, remember this part. And you like running to be hurt in a good way, so you get what you want there:) Just set a sound plan and follow it! I'll be looking forward reading about it, and taper madness is kind of cool too, gives you perspective and a different feel of your emotions. Now stop fidgeting and relax, because you'll be fine, you are very smart and very strong!!!

Let me pass on a wise saying to you before your race.

"It doesn't have to be fun to be fun." Think about it and be inspired, or frightened, either one will do.
